Moving Into Music

Age: Courses for parents and babies/ toddlers aged 6 mths – 18mths
Structure: 8-10 lessons of 45 minutes duration per school term
Class Size: Up to 8 children with parents

Courses in eight lesson blocks give parents the chance to explore the parent-child bond in a musical way…using touch, traditional rhymes, songs and chants, dance, movement and instrumental play. Materials used in activities stimulate auditory pathways as well as the young child’s eyes, body and mind. Parents are directed to resources to assist understanding of the developing child.

Children begin to discover the world of music through rhyming, singing, moving, dancing and playing simple percussion instruments. For toddlers this can be the first opportunity to share growing and learning together. Parents work as partners with their children and, led by the teacher, contribute to fostering and building a stimulating, exciting and supportive learning environment for the group.

A variety of activities that increase in difficulty and complexity are used to lay musical foundations at this level. Musical skills are developed through speech and singing, movement and dance, listening and playing of percussion instruments. We explore musical concepts, develop creativity through improvisation and build self-esteem providing the cornerstones of the learning process. The joy of being actively involved in creating music will set the child on the path to a lifelong appreciation of music.
